Wonderful Morning On The Fly
Happy June & Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, I had Master Decoy Carver, Bob Mosher, for fly fishing striped bass. Bob has fished with me several times and today was another fine morning with some fine fish on the fly!
At first light, a low incoming tide, near calm winds, with a light SW. The bay was flat and there was a lovely sunrise. Water temps were 55 degrees.
First goal was to find birds working topwater striped bass but there were none. No birds, no topwater action anywhere to speak of. So, we switched over to try and see if there were fish on the little rips scattered around the bay. BINGO! We found fish laying along the channel edges in decent numbers, with some keepers in the mix!
Bob made his own Sage Fly Rod and had it rigged with an ORVIS Coldwater Intermediate line, with a 20lb five foot leader, on a PENN fly reel. I tied on a very special fly for this occasion: “Gover’s Pinky Fly.” This amazing pattern is a dead-ringer for a squid and the bass absolutely slammed it today. It looks just amazing in the water and never tangles. Note to Gover: I’ll take a dozen for starters! What a fly…
One nice keeper took Bob right into his backing and dove deep to the bottom of the channel. But the 10wt Sage was no match and Bob invited him to come aboard to say hello. We took a quick photo and released him.
We worked the bay in a few places over a square couple of miles but it was void of fish in almost all of my spots. The best fishing was the first two and half hours shortly after the tide began to come into the bay. Those fish were active and we caught striped bass or had hits on almost every drift. A great morning on the bay with a great angler and fly rodder.
Back At It. STAY POSTED. We got some weather on the way for the weekend and into early next week. Keep an eye on the NOAA Marine Forecast.
