The Float Test:
I am testing some decoys to see how they ride on the water, and to check for balance and overall appearance.
The Mallard Drake is hollow, hand-carved by Brian Mitchell, with a wooden keel that I asked him to add. It measures 16″ inches long. The Wood Duck Drake pair are hollow eastern white cedar by Marty Collins, no keels, weighted with traditional lead weight tacked to the bottom. They measure 15″ inches long. Both carvers are from Massachusetts.
I am happy to report these birds float and ride well and are ready for service. Lovely birds.
