Recon: Day 2 – Nothing Yet…
STRIPER UPDATE
I have been checking some of the early spring striper spots around our bay. Things are looking fishy, but nothing yet. Terns have not arrived on our bay as of this morning. Any day now… In 2012 they arrived on April 12th – earliest on record in my journals. Typically, they arrive May 3rd, with the first schoolies. I am convinced there are straggler schoolies in the bay right now. They start to trickle in when the dandy lions start to bloom. There are fresh fish in RI as of yesterday.
TROUT BITE
Trout bite continues to be very good. But they are finicky! I fished Saturdy and landed 8 rainbows on dry flies and on nymphs. Fish were rising all over the ponds and I counted well over 200 rises in three hours. It was probably much more than that. Top patterns continue to be an Adams for a dry and a pheasant tail or wooly bugger for a nymph.
LARGEMOUTH BASS
Baymen Mike Dixon continues to slam largemouth bass in the ponds of the south shore, especially at dusk/night. He is landing largemouth over five pounds on swimbaits. Nice to hear after the major winter kills we had this winter. There are still plenty of fish to catch.
Stay posted – first schoolies any day!
