October
With the Gale winds and some heavy rain, I am off the bay for a few days until this blows over. Also, keeping an eye on the hurricane that could impact us next week with big seas…
The past five days have been straight out. We had the super moon that sucked all the water out of the bay and boat ramp, and I was dropping in at the wee hours of the mornings at 3:00am to beat the tides. Also, before the current gale winds, we had brutal small craft advisory winds out of the NE with 3-4 foot chop non-stop, inside the bay. We fished it and I spent a couple days at the chiropractor afterwards.
Going back a few trips, I had repeat clients and friends, Kevin Erickson and Gary Condon on board September 23rd for light tackle stripers. Kevin brought along his good friends Bob and Bob’s son, down from Maine. It was Bob’s b-day and Kevins Anniversary, so a special trip all around for everyone. We slammed the bass that day: 71 fish and 3 keepers!!!
On the 25th through the 28th, I had client and friend, Richard “The Machine” Comstock for FLY ONLY bass and blues. On day one, the NE winds started to kick up and it was tough fishing. To top it off, the bass were on an ultra selective feed. And when I dropped the boat in that morning in the darkness, the clutch on my starter sheared off! Thanks to an amazing mechanic, Doug Fontana, who came to the dock, made repairs and had Richard and I on the bay by 9:00am. But it was too late. The insane morning blitz had ended. On day two, the NE winds blew up big time with 3-4 foot chop and steady 20 knots with higher gusts. It was brutal. The bay was rocking. I won’t take clients out into that, but I will take Richard “The Machine” Comstock! The blitz was insane, almost all blues with a few bass. Richard had a giant blue make a two-hundred yard run non-stop. It was like a small football tuna and it took twenty minutes to land that fish. On day three, the NE winds layed down flat. The blues were completely gone, but the bay was alive with striped bass and we did well.
On the 29th, I had repeat clients and friends, Chris and Molly DeVillers for light tackle striped bass. The winds were still laying down, but starting to pick-up ahead of the gale. But it was very managable. We made the run to the power plant, Priscilla’s and Mary-Ann’s on reliable reports that giant blues were there the day before. But there were no blues to be found anywhere this day. I wondered if a shark or bluefin tuna had come through and pushed them out…? Back inside the bay, it was stacked with schools of bass everywhere. Small to medium schools of fish on topwater and also downn deep. We got into a bunch of fish and ended the morning with 23 bass caught and released. An awesome morning on the bay.
Yesterday, the gale winds arrived as promised, along with heavy rains. Today, the gales continue and seas out front at Gurnet and High Pines are forecasted to top ten feet by tomorrow morning!!! I’ll be there, watching safely from shore…
On Sunday, the affects of the hurricane are forecasted to arrive on our waters. Time will tell what we get for rains, winds and seas and how long it will last…
My last charter is October 6th and then I am done for the season. Time to switch gears and start the hunting season.
Happy October from Baymen Land. It is a glorious time to be alive!
Sincerely,
Capt. Dave
