Mexico Needle Fish on Baymen Universal
Client and friend, Jay Wolf, has landed a new species on my Baymen Universal: Needle Fish. I tied up some Baymen Universals for his trip to Mexico recently and he is fishing them there for a variety of species.
As far as I know, Jay is the first to land a Needle Fish on my fly pattern in Mexico. Great to add another species to the list of fish caught on this fly.
A little background on the Baymen Universal: I designed this fly pattern about 30 years ago for striped bass in our bay here on the MA coast. The colors are olive-white-pink-red, tied with black thread on a short shank hook. I studied all the dominant bait species in our bay and the color schemes of each bait. I tied many color schemes and tested this fly rigorously for two years before finally deciding on the final design.
Striped Bass slammed it and anglers began fishing my Baymen Universal around the world for other species: Yellow Fin Tuna, Dolly Varden, Skipjack, Sea-run Cutthroat, Small Mouth Bass, Bonefish, Chain Pickerel, and a whole other host of species have now been taken on my pattern.
Thanks to everyone that fishes my fly. I tie them over the winter months, December through March and they are available at those times only.
Tight Lines!
