Slow Morning, 3 Fish
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, Baymen Dick Bowman for his 2nd charter of the season. Last week, Dick boated 30 fish with me on light tackle. After yesterday’s NE blow, we were excited to get back on the bay.
At first light SW/W/NW/W LOL… It was surprisingly choppy for 8 knots and the wind finally decided to lay down out of the West and near calm. Water temps were 56 degrees.
As we motored out into the bay, we passed several small schools of pogy. Further on, we began to see small baitfish leaping all over the bay, in every direction you looked. They looked like 6″-10″ hickory shad and nothing was chasing them. Also, there were no birds to speak of working bait anywhere inside the bay.
Topwater was non-existent so we began to work structure. We marked three small schools of fish total after fishing Duxbury, Kingston and Plymouth waters. All of them were hugging bottom with a few in the mid-water column. One school had 30 fish and they all had lock jaw. They ignored our offerings. Next school had a dozen fish and we had just one hit. The third school was a little more active on the incoming tide and we managed to land a couple bass on light tackle topwater poppers and rubber crankbaits.
Yesterday’s NE winds blew a ton of “monkey fur” seaweed into the bay – the brown, slimy stuff that you have to pick off after every cast. When the tide turned and started coming in, it thinned out. We literally bounced jigs off the heads of that school of 30 bass without a hit and the seaweed may have been a factor…
On the way to the harbor, Dick had to stop for a deer in the road. On the bay, we saw one seal amongst all the baits. No birds, no topwater, very few fish in the bay at the moment. But that will change any day now.
Total catch and release today was 3 fish landed, 15 other hits, and 8 “gentlemen’s release” – bass that threw the hook.
The fishing should pick back up in a tide or two. We will be there when it does and will post in the next Baymen Report.
