Duck Hunt
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
In my duck blind today, I had new duck hunter Bob Sacco. Bob fished for striped bass with me this summer on the bay and it was a pleasure to have him back for a duck hunt.
At first light, a thick, foggy mist on the water that was just beautiful. Temps in the high 40’s and not a breath of wind. Fall colors glowing along the water.
Really good flights today for pre-waterfowl migration. A flock of geese, a pair of black ducks, a solo mallard, and about twenty wood ducks in several different flocks. Birds decoyed very well over our simple spread that consisted of a pair of mallard, a pair of black duck, a pair of wood duck, and a pair of Canada geese, with a big hole in the middle for the birds to land. Bob ended the morning with a beautiful pair of wood ducks, his first ever birds as a duck hunter.
It was a lovely paddle out and back. I love these fall mornings with just a little crisp air and the glow of autumn all around me. It is a spiritual experience for me to be in a part of God’s creation floating like a leaf on the water in the pre-dawn darkness, setting the decoys, and waiting for the flights at first light.
Happy Autumn and happy hunting.
