Blues Blitz!!!
Wire Up: Hundreds of giant blues to 15lbs came into the bay this morning at 9:00am!
On board today, I regular, Billy Tedeschi for light tackle striped bass. At first light, a lovely orange sunrise that resembled sand on the beach after the tide has gone out. Just beautiful.
Right out of the gate, we got into a small pod of fat schooled bass in the Dog Leg. They were in 1.4 feet of water and Billy caught several with his Yo-Zuri popper.
Next up, we ran to Kingston in hopes of finding some blitzing striped bass under birds. It was a ghost town. From there, we ran to Clark’s Island and Saquish Head and fished over the eel grass beds. We landed a few more very small bass.
Later, we found a quick striper blitz in the middle of the bay and Billy hooked into a 27 3/4″ inch fish! Back in it went and we continued searching the bay for topwater.
And then it happend…. Hundreds of giant blues to 15lbs began to pour into the bay on the rising tide! They were feeding on topwater as well as sub-surface and slammed our light tackle gear giving us fights that would not end. After catching a bunch, we tried to get out of them and find some striped bass. But it was no use. Blues were everywhere inside the bay. They were feeding just like striped bass, and they fooled us many times. Bass were with them, but the big blues took the tackle first almost every time.
At one point, I saw a huge striped bass roll right beside the boat with the blues. That striper was a giant, bigger than yesterdays fish!
Winds began to kick up under the overcast skies and we landed a few more fish and called it a great morning. Nice to finally see the blues inside the bay. Tomorrow is September 1st and it is looking like great fall fishing for another solid month or more…
We ended the morning with 17 fish total, a mix of bass and blues.
