Bass, Macks, 1 Keepah
Happy August!
On board today, I had Mark Kennedy and his three children, for light tackle, live-line, and chunk mack striped bass fishing.
We took it easy and headed out an hour later than usual to make it easier on the kids. Just as we left the harbor, we found top-water stripers hitting bait on the surface. A handful of birds were working them overhead. All three of Mark’s kids hooked up and landed a striper in short order.
It was flat calm, so we decided to run offshore of Gurnet and jig for macks. Our first drift landed us ten in just a few minutes. Then, the bite shut down and we tried trolling for them with no luck. A couple more drops and no more mack, so we headed back into the bay live-line. First mack over and a good run on a small bass. We drifted several more times and picked up two more fish, one of them a keepah!
We decided to check out Powder Point Bridge area and saw Santa fishing on the bridge. He reported a few small fish early, but nothing by the time we arrived. We decided to anchor up and try our luck and caught spider crabs!
Next up, Clark’s Island as the winds turned (you guessed it!) east. Nobody home. From there we ran to Plymouth and set a nice, long drift in a narrow channel without a hit. East winds…
We ended the day with 8 bass, 1 keepah, and ten macks. A fun morning on the bay with three very good fishermen and their Dad!
