43 Fish on LT
Greetings from BAYMEN!
On board today, long-time regulars, Gary Condon and Greg Powers for light tackle striped bass.
At first light zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…… The Captain overslept by 35 minutes! Fourth time in 30 years of guiding, but always embarrassing. In my own defense I had to make a very late run to Logan last night and did not get to bed until midnight. I know, I know, quitcha whining LOL… Gary and Greg were very understanding and the first thing they did when I stepped on the boat was hand me a hot coffee and a muffin. Spoiled Captain!
Well, out on the bay we found multiple small schools of spooky bass working micro baitfish. We started to move around from school to school until we were all the way down to White Horse! Then back up onto Browns and there were enough fish there to keep us busy through slack tide.
Back inside the bay on the incoming, we found fish up on the flats in water so shallow, we could not get to then in my flats skiff. So, we drove way and found more schools of fish scattered around the bay that took our tackle. Many of the schools of fish are selective and spooky, making setting drifts a little difficult. But other schools were less spooky. All schools were very fast moving with the bait. Everything was topwater today with the exception of one fish down deep that hit a Baymen Jig.
Top tackle almost exclusively, were small, white/bone colored spooks fished on topwater. It took some work, but persistence was the key and the fish were eventually strike. We also got a few fish on rubber crankbaits and Baymen Jigs.
The Aquarium was nice and clear and we could see 34″+ fish swimming around on the bottom at slack and post slack, but they would take nothing. They were just happy to be resting and relaxing with full bellies!
Total catch and release today was 43 striped bass. All on LT, almost all on topwater spooks.
After fishing, we drifted and enjoyed a nice lunch that Gary had brought on board. Subs with all the fixings, cold drinks, chips, and cookies! This Captain came in fat and happy and thankful for the best clients on earth for the past thirty years.
Back At It – STAY POSTED. A solid month and half left before we call it quits and head for the North Woods for Autumn.
