21 Fish on Fly & LT
On board today, Brian Ware, Esquire. Brian has been fishing with me for at least ten years now.
At first light, dead-calm seas on the low tide, with a touch of W wind. The first hour was perfect fly casting weather and Brian landed several fish. However, the winds soon changed to the NE (big surprise!) and the rest of the day was quite choppy. We made the switch to light tackle and fished on.
Brian is a BASS tournament angler and he knows technique inside and out. It was pure pleasure for this guide to watch him work a piece of water and hook up on fish.
There was ZERO topwater action today as has been the case most of the spring on our bay, with few exceptions. We concentrated on all structure and found fish in four different spots. 100% of all the bass were hugging the bottom as soon as the wind changed from W to NE. Brian used the cast and count technique to get the tackle down to the fish. His retrieve was a modified Baymen Bounce and it worked great.
Top tackle today was TFO Axiom II X 9 wt with an intermediate line, 20lb tippet, and Baymen Universal No-Eyes. For LT, rods were TFO Inshore 8-17lb rigged with Corlland Master Braid, Sampo barrel swivels and 20 lb leaders. Reels were Okuma spinners.
Total catch and release today was 21 striped bass. No sign of seals and no sign of sharks… A great day guiding and watching a very skilled angler working the water.
