127 Fish
AUGUST 30th:
On board today, I had repeat clients, Gary Condon, Greg Powers, and Matt Daily for light tackle striped bass.
The fish we have been chasing all week have left the bay and new schools of fish were coming into the bay on the rising tide. The huge schools of bait we have been seeing were also gone. But new schools of bait were coming into the bay.
The morning started out very hot and humid with flat calm seas. We found no fish on the rip lines around the bay but we did find some small schools of fish along Brown’s Bank and in the Cow Yard. After the tide bottomed out and started to come back in, schools of fresh bass poured into the bay!
We began to move around from pod to pod of fish. We could see bait leaping out of the water and some birds were starting to work the fish. In many areas we fished there were no birds and no sign of topwater. But the fish were still there down below.
The steamy, hot temps out of the S/SW suddenly shifted to the North and cooler air poured over the bay and temps dropped. And the bass bite just exploded over the flats. Birds, bait and bass all working topwater. It was loud! The fish were not finicky in the north wind and hit just about anything we threw at them. What a difference a favorable wind can make!
We finally called it a great morning and came in with fish still blitzing all over the bay. Total catch and release was 127 fish! All shorts to 26″ inches, which has been the norm all week. Great fun on light tackle in the fall run!
