76 Fish on LT!
Happy August from Capt. Dave & Baymen Guide Service, Inc. aka, “Baymen Charters.”
On board today, I had regulars, Gary Condon and Greg Powers for light tackle striped bass and it was amazing….! With yesterday’s cold front that passed through, and the very low tides emptying the bay of all the hot water, Inside bay temps dropped 11 degrees! That is a huge change and fishing activity picked up considerably. Both in size and quantity.
At first light, hot coffee and pastries, flat calm seas and a near low, -1.3 dropping tide. We found fish along the flats in most spots. We hooked up on a bunch. Then, a very pretty paddle boarder came by and told us she spooked a ton of fish in shallow water along one of the flats. I thanked her for the tip, we motored over to the spot, and sure enough – it was stacked with striped bass in 3-4 fow!!! We fished that spot for an hour or more and hooked up on just about every other cast. The fish were fat, up to 26″ inches.
Next we decided to run outside and have a look around. Bingo! We found more fish cruising right on the surface. A handful of birds were around and helped us located the fish. We hooked up on many more.
The BIG excitment was two MASSIVE explosions about 35 yards off the boat. I am talking tuna blow-ups massive! We zipped right over and made many casts and never saw another break. About ten minutes later, another MASSIVE blow-up about fifty yards off the bow made our jaws drop. These were either tuna and very big striped bass…. We will never know because we never saw them again and we never marked them. Could they have Great Whites…? Yes. That is another possibility but we just don’t know for sure what they were. Whales or seals – they were not!
Well, mid-trip today, Gary break open a big cooler of food as is his custom on all our charters. Subs with all the fixings, beverages, chips, cookies, candy bars… And you wonder how Capt. Dave still manages to look so buffed!
Total catch and release today: a whopping 76 striped bass and 1 bluefish. Top tackle: My Baymen Light Tackle Jig from Jeck’s Bucktails. The striped bass absolutely crushed it!
Back at, stay posted. The best fishing of the season is almost here…!
Sincerely,
Capt. David Bitters, BAYMEN, baymenlife.com
