54 Fish
On board today, I had repeat clients Al Uhler, Ted Healy and Jeff Hardenstine for light tackle striped bass. It was dead calm all morning on the bay with several waves of rain passing through and fog off and on.
At first light, on the low, rising tide, the bay was very quiet. No birds, no top-water action in Dux/Ply/King. We fished some structure for a short time and as the tide rose, small, scattered pods of bass started to enter the bay. Some fish began to drive bait to the surface and small groups of birds began working the fish. We started to pick up lots of schooled bass of all sizes, but mostly in the low to mid twenty inches, with several fish taping out to 27″ inches.
After chasing top-water, we began to work some very shallow water structure spots. We had about eight fish follow or strike and we hooked up on several. We ran to another structure spot across the bay and picked up a few more fish to 26″ inches. After that, it was back to setting drifts where two or three birds were giving signs that there were fish down below – and there was. Birds don’t lie.
Tackle today was rubber crank baits and Gagg’s Grabber poppers, fished on 30lb Power Pro braided line. The bass took both baits all morning. Total catch and release was 54 striped bass to 27″ inches.
A great morning on the bay with lovely spring conditions.
Tight Lines,
