53 Fish, 2 Keepers
On board today, I had 8th year repeat customer, Dick Bowman, for LT striped bass.
At first light, and a high dropping tide, we began running recon to locate fish. We found three large schools of fish scattered across the bay from Duxbury to Plymouth. We spent several hours working a school over the flats chasing micro-sized baitfish about a half-inch long with the profile of a toothpick! No keepers in this school but nice fish to 25.5 inches in the mix.
Next up we fished deep water of 24 feet and had a large school of fish on top working the same size micro bait. I counted 300 fish on the surface all at once in this school. How many were underneath…? No keepers in this pod and a mix of small schoolies to some larger schoolies.
Our final school of fish was off by itself a mile + from the other fish. We were in skinny water of a few feet and watched a couple keeper bass chasing bait up onto the flats right beside our boat. If I was quick with the net, I might of been able to scoop one up! But we cast to this small group of bass and landed two keepers after several drifts.
Total catch and release today was 53 fish and 2 keepers. We kept one keeper to go home with the client. Top tackle continues to be rubber crank baits and you will hook up on about 1 in 10 casts if you are luck. We also fished topwater plugs for a short time and landed a few fish on them. Both keepers were taken on rubber crank baits as were most fish today.
