52 Fish
Today I had new client, Paul O’Keefe Jr. and his father, Paul, on board for fly and light tackle striped bass.
The winds finally laid down and the seas were calm and flat for most of the trip. There was no “Spring Blitz” inside the bay and very little topwater or birds working. But there were a lot of singles, pairs and small schools of fish scattered around the bay and we found them all.
We fished a total of nine of my spots over the course of the morning and about half of them had fish on the bottom with occasional topwater fish to tip us off. We fished rubber crank baits with single hooks and also topwater spooks and pencil poppers with the barbs crimped down.
Total catch and release today was 52 striped bass to 24.5″ inches. No keepers inn the mix but we did mark TWO keepers for the morning that vanished after our first drift over them. A highlight today, was giving Paul Jr. some fly casting lessons and then having him hook up on his first striped bass on the fly. I am hoping we have a new convert to the Baymen Brotherhood.
