5 Fish, Fog, Drizzle, East Chop
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, one of my long-time regulars and prior service USMC, Baymen Dick Bowman for light tackle striped bass!
We knew it would be slow fishing today with the E/SE chop, but we just had to go fish. You know the feeling. We were not alone, as another seasoned angler was just heading out at the same time, and helped me push my boat off the trailer. (Thank you, Dennis!).
At first light, heavy dense fog, drizzle, E/SE chop, and high tide. We fired up the electronics and dead reckoned for an area we hoped would hold fish even in an east wind. A slow chop run across the bay and we arrived to the exact spot. Actually, it is many spots over a large area and we planned to fish all of them and did.
Poppers were the plan to try and attract striped bass up off structure. Dick fished hard non-stop all morning and his efforts paid off. He was not phased by the drizzle, east chop, and dense fog. He rigged up his fiberglass light tackle rods with a Hogy popper and worked the structure. WHAM! A nice surprise striper came up and slammed his tackle. Many more fish did chase downs and tail swipes (common behavior in an East wind in our bay). Four more fish hit the lure and Dick landed them all.
Total catch and release today was 5 glorious fish, with another 11 chase downs and tail slaps. We took several breaks to sit and chat and Dick shared many of his lifetime stories with me of fishing and hunting with friends in the North Maine Woods. Right there, you can see he had my full attention!
Later in the morning, the winds laid down almost flat, the sun came out, and it turned into a beautiful, spring day. If you happen to run into Baymen Bowman or see him on social media, wish him a very happy belated birthday.
Back at it. Tight Lines & STAY POSTED: Only four more months of striped bass fishing ahead :o)
