45 Fish
On board today, regular client, Billy Tedeschi for light tackle striped bass.
At first light we ran to yesterday’s hot spot to search for the one mile x half-mile school of striped bass. They were gone as expected, moved out and south on their journey to Chesapeake Bay for the winter months. That’s the number one nursery for the striped bass. 90% of all stripers originate from the Chesapeake and return their each winter to spawn. The remaining 10% breed in the Hudson and Delaware rivers.
We found some decent pods of striped bass working peanut bunker on topwater. They stay up for a few minutes and then go back down, and pop up again somewhere else. A handful of birds were working the bait being driven to the surface.
Next spot we ran deep into Kingston. Very quiet up there but we found a couple more fish around structure and a small pod of fish working topwater. After that, we ran to Plymouth and found another decent pod of fish pushing bait and we picked up a few more fish. Tide was dropping fast so we could not stay there long or risk getting stuck in shallow waters.
From there, we ran back into Duxbury waters and found some more fish on the channel edges. No birds or bait but a few fish were still there. Coming in, we saw a handful of gulls working bait in the main channel.
Billy fishes the Yo-Zuri popper and has it down to a science. All fish were taken on his topwater popper today. Total catch and release was 45 fish, all shorts but lots of fun in skinny water on light tackle gear.
Congratulations are in order to Billy Tedeschi for joining the Fifty Pounder club. Billy fished Block Island recently with his wife, Cheryle, and he landed a 50lb striped bass trolling a bunker spoon on wire! Cheryle also landed a big striper in the 40lb range. They were fishing aboard the C-Devil II Sportfishing, Inc. Way to go, guys. The Fish of a lifetime!
Back at it. Stay Posted. I am fishing into the first week of October.
