43 Fish, 1 Keeper
On board today, I had repeat clients, Chaplin Col. Timothy Mallard, his daughter, Anna, and friend John Wolff for LT striped bass fishing.
At first light, a little chop and a west wind. NOAA had posted a small craft advisory but for our bay, a west wind is never an issue – unless it starts to top 15-20 knots. Today, it stayed around 10 knots. Bumpy but nice.
We found several small pods of fish scattered around the bay, from Duxbury to Kingston to Plymouth. Birds were working and peanut bunker was the primary bait. We fished rubber crank baits almost exclusively to match the bait. We tried poppers where I had hoped there would be some big fish, but nobody home. All small fish inside the bay again today, but Col. Mallard got a small keeper out of a school of breaking fish!
The fish were a little skittish as in the past few trips. My guess is these migrating fish have been pushed down from north of us, maybe as far away as Maine. Lots and lots of small fish have been the rule all week. Fun to catch and you learn a lot about striped bass patterns and fishing techniques that can be applied to bigger fish when you find them.
Total catch and release today was 43 striped bass and one keeper that went home with the crew for dinner. A lovely morning on our bay, even in light chop. Thanks to my longest standing client, Tom Bullock, for booking this trip but was unable to attend today. Tom been fishing with me every year for the past 24 seasons and he already has a date on the books for next season!
Tight Lines & good fishing to all,
Capt. Dave
