42 Fish
On board today, I had solo angler, Gary Condon, for light tackle striped bass. My prayer last night was that the bay would be flat calm and filled with fish. Prayers answered!
At first light, the bay was dead calm. We found a few fish on the rips on the half-tide dropping. We worked them over and then left for other waters. To our delight, we found topwater striped bass in our next spot. We also found pogies with bass under them to about 25″-27″ inches.
When the tide bottomed out and started to come back in, we moved to our fourth spot of the morning and found a handful of topwater striped bass chasing bait. We fished that school of bass until they moved on and so did we.
Our next spot of the morning was in three feet of water – and a ton of striped bass busting topwater bait! I told Gary this was exactly like bone fishing in Belize or Andros. It was a fish on almost every cast and the fish put up great fights in the shallow waters.
As is Gary’s habit, we took a break and enjoyed a wonderful lunch of subs, chips, cookies, ice tea, and a piece of chocoate! I could hardly move LOL. But move we did to our last spot of the morning to more shallow-water topwater fish chasing bait and ended the morning with a whopping 42 striped bass caught and released for one rod. Not a bad day for early August!
Technical Stuff: Bait was mixed in the bay. Tiny micro white/silver minnows; also four inch long, narrow baits. And lots of pogies of various sizes. Not much under the pogies in size but there are fish there. The best fishing was in the micro baits and in the very shallow waters. Those fish were blitzing like it was fall. Water temps ranged 74 degrees to 62 degrees. Winds were calm and then switched to a light NE and then a light SE. No sign of GW but the shark copter was cruising over the bay last evening.
