37 Fish on Fly & LT
Greetings from Capt. Dave & Baymen Guide Service, Inc!
Great to be back on the bay today after COVID, with one of my favorite couples: Anthony & Talia Romano. This husband and wife team fished with me last season and did well. Today they crushed it out there once again on fly and light tackle gear!
At first light, a high tide and flat calm bay, and sunny. Air temps were cool. A classic New England Spring day, one day before the start of summer. No topwater today to speak of, which has been typical the past few seasons at this time of year. We would need a lot more bait inside the bay to get the Spring Blitz topwater fishing. But we did find a lot of fish today by paying attention to structure, flats, and couple of gulls, and the occasinoal topwater break.
The first spot we checked this am was void of fish. The second spot gave up one fish and a couple chasers. The third spot of the morning was stacked with fish! These fish were up on the flats and we switched out our rubber crank baits and Baymen Jigs for topwater poppers for both fly and light tackle and never looked back. The bass hammered our poppers in shallow waters from 2-6 fow on almost all our drifts.
Total catch and release today was 37 striped bass. Many fish in the 27- 27 3/4″ inch range and all very fat and hard fighters. All were enticed to topwater. We saw 2 seals in our last spot of the morning and came in under warm, sunny skies and a dropping tide. A great day on the bay and it felt great to be back on the water with Anthony & Talia. Great job, guys!
