32 Striped Bass on Fly
The NE winds are gone and the bay was flat-calm today. Lots of small bass with some fall blitz topwater action. Today’s trip was a cancellation and Col. Comstock was in town and picked it up.
We were basically into fish all morning. We fished two main areas and had the fish all to ourselves. However, one spot had many large gray seals and another spot had big rollers coming across the flats from the NE winds we have had. So those two spots we took a pass on and concentrated on other areas that were filled with fish!
With the flat calm bay, The Colonel fished his favorite way for half the trip: Topwater Poppers! The explosive hits are so exciting to see and experience. We have had great success with a Red/White single hook fly popper with a white marabou tail, fished on an ORVIS floating line and cast on a 9WT rod. The best hit of the morning was a striped bass that came up from under the popper and sailed at least four feet into the air straight up above the water. It looked more like a tarpon or a salmon. It was so awesome to see!
Our total catch and release today was 32 striped bass all on the fly. Top fly patterns were the Red/White Popper, my Baymen Universal, and my Baymen Clouser. The fish slammed all three all morning. Let’s hope today’s fish are a portent of things to come as the fall run continues…!
POSTSCRIPT: I almost forgot to mention another exciting part of today – We were fly fishing the shallows with fish breaking around us in 3-5 fow. With polarized Costa’s we could see right through the water. We had up to THIRTY fish at a time chasing down our flies! It was just a crazy sight to see! – Capt. Dave
