25 Fish on Fly & LT
On board today, I had new clients, Ed & Cindy Dubois for fly and light tackle striped bass.
Last night, NOAA was calling for SW choppy seas this am and I called Ed to discuss it. We decided to give it a shot and are we glad we did! NOAA got it wrong, and the bay was nearly flat calm most of the morning with a slight breeze out of the West on the low rising tide.
My prayers were answered as we pulled into the first breaking school of fish and Cindy landed a keeper striped bass on our first cast of the morning! That fish slammed a rubber crank bait in about 3 fow up on the flats. We continued to work that school of fish and Ed and Cindy both hooked up. Ed was on the fly rod fishing a Baymen Universal fly pattern on an intermediate line. Cindy was fishing a 4″ rubber crank bait in pearl color on braided line.
Later in the morning, we ran over to Bug Light and there were a lot of birds working topwater bait being chased by bass. But we were the FIFTEENTH boat in the mix and it was just too much to set drifts and get on the fish with any regularity. If you know me, I hate to share fish! LOL… Well, a few boats is fine, but I’m not into fishing with an entire fleet. So, we left that area and went back up onto the flats in the skinny water. Ed switched to a top water popper and floating line on the fly rod and hooked up. Cindy continued to land fish on LT.
We moved around the bay and fished a topwater Spook and hooked into another keeper in structure in about 3 fow. That fish put up a great fight and threw the hook at boat. We reset the drift and hooked into several more for fish.
We then made a trip over to Plymouth waters and fished structure in one of my top spots. No fish! From there we ran up into Kingston and fished another top spot. Zip! Not bump. So, we took a short break, Cindy gave us some amazing sandwiches she made and washed it all down with cold iced tea. Then we headed for the last drift of the morning and got into a school of small fish on the bottom. Great fun on LT!
Total catch and release today was 25 fish and a nice keeper that went home in the cooler. A perfect weather day on the bay with two great anglers.
Back at it. STAY POSTED:
