21 Fish
On board today, I had repeat client, Dr. Stephen Mott, for fly and light tackle striped bass.
At first light, we had a choppy wind out of the North that would gust up and then lay down. It was breezy and made fly casting a challenge. But Stephen nailed his first five striped bass of the morning on the nine weight, fishing my Baymen Universal fly pattern. Then he switched over to light tackle and fished a spook and a rubber crank bait and added sixteen more fish to the catch and release count.
Fish were very, very aggressive today, fighting hard as they bulk up for the migration south to the Chesapeak, Delaware, and Hudson rivers for the winter. They are not “holding” and moved around the bay in about a one mile area, in very small pods. It was a challenge to stay with them and it took patience to wait for them to corral the bait and drive it up to the surface.
We ended the morning with 21 striped bass caught and released. Most fish were 23.5 inches and one fished topped 26 inches. No blues inside and no keepers with these schools of fish.

Postscript: Well into our charter, my starter decided to die on the Merc. I made a quick on the water repair, and we got back to the dock. My mechanic, Doug Fontana, was on it within an hour, and we are back up and ready for our next trip! If you need a boat mechanic, give Doug Fontana a call and tell him Capt.
