21 Fish on Fly & LT
Greetings from Capt. Dave & BAYMEN!
On board today, Kent Sorenson and his Dad, Kent, Sr. for Fly & Light Tackle Striped Bass. Kent fly fished with me last season and it is a joy to watch him cast an 8wt and 9wt fly rod. About as good as anyone I have ever guided on the fly. Kent, Sr. flew up from Colorado and showed me some amazing photos of steelhead on the fly in his local waters!
At first light, a low tide incoming, and calm seas. A touch of West wind. Water temps 62 degrees inside the bay.
We found fish at our first stop of the morning, up on the shallow water flats that were as shallow as 2.5 feet at times. Kent fished the TK Legacy 8wt with an ORIVS Intermediate line and a Mike Rice rabbit fur strip clouser in olive and white. Kent , Sr. fished the light tackle rubber crankbaits.
After a couple drifts, we figured out where the fish were holding and it was game on. I don’t think we had a drift today where we didn’t hook up on a fish or at least have a follow or a hit. The drifts were quite fast on the incoming tide with the currents and we did a lot of casting and counting down to reach the fish. Very little topwater today and almost no bird activity as has been the norm this season. But the fish are here. We just have to work a little harder to find them.
No seals seen today. No rumors of Great Whites anywhere near our waters yet… No sign of the four Orca Killer Whales that were photographed on the Cape, and no sign of The Bear!
Total catch and release today was 21 very healthy looking fish, all fat and well fed, and all amazing fighters right to the boat.
Happy Father’s Day to all the awesome Dad’s out there!
Sincerely,
Capt. David Bitters, BAYMEN, www.baymenlife.com 31 Years Guiding The Bay. Still In Love.
