17 Fish
Today, I had an old friend, Peter Gaudette, from Baymen Outfitters, the bait, tackle and fly shop I ran many years back. Those were fun times and Pete was a regular at the Thursday Night fly Tying & Fishing Club. Today, he was on board for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, we hit the last two hours of dropping tide in a few spots in Kingston and Plymouth bay. Fish were there, like clockwork. They hit our rubber crank baits right through to slack tide. Then, as predicted, the bite shut down. We ran back to harbor, got some bait and went back out for the incoming tide. SW winds were relentless all morning, but they stayed down under 15 knots and managable.
Two spots I was sure we would hook up on a big fish gave us two short runs and the spit hooks. Small bass. A couple more spots were void of fish. The last spot, another tried and true big bass spot, have us a couple more short runs and sit hooks. Then, we hooked up on a fish that was shy of a keeper. As Pete bright it up alongside the boat a BIG bass was right on its tail. I put that fish at 36″+ easy. We re-drifted a few more times hoping to get that cow to pick up, but no luck.
We ended the morning with 17 striped bass. All short, feisty fish. Sunny and windy on the bay, and always lovely. Good time, Pete!
Tight lines and best of luck when you head out on your next trip.
Sincerely,
Capt. Dave
