17 fish, 1 Keeper
On board today, I had repeat client, Billy Tedeschi, for LT and mack striped bass.
We headed out at 4am into SW winds that blew pretty much all morning at 14-20 knots. But it was managable and we fished through it with no trouble.
The goal today was to fish fresh mack chunks in several spots around the bay, looking for some big bass. In our first spot, we had a few taps and a two second run with no hook-ups. In our next spot we had two more two second runs and no hook-ups. We guessed small bass were hitting our chunks.
As we headed to our third spot of the morning, topwater action started to turn on and we could not resist. Birds started working, and we joined them for topwater fun with Spooks & Yo-Zuris. Fishing action was good to great, although the bass did not hold for long and we had to keep up with them – especially in the SW winds. While working the topwater with LT, we floated chunks off the back of the boat and picked up a few short bass. We also picked up one small keeper bass. And we picked up the first dogfish of the season. One of them was huge!
After chasing birds and topwater stripers, we left them and set up some drifts in quieter waters. Nothing doing in any of my spots. Where are the big fish this year? So, we went back out and found more topwater action and had some more exciting fishing, watching the hits and hooking up on very healthy bass.
Total catch and release today was 17 fish, including two dogfish, and 1 keeper bass that went home with Billy. Not bad topwater action for almost July!
Tight Lines & stay posted.
Sincerely,
Capt. Dave
