15 Fish
On board today, I had regular, Billy Tedeschi for light tackle striped bass.
At first light, flat calm conditions on a near top of the tide. Very humid and uncomfortably hot. It got even hotter as the morning went on and today was the first day this season that I needed to drink water while on the boat.
Fish were thinned out on the rising tide, but there were singles zipping around the bay chasing very small pockets of bait. Billy fished his trademark Yo-Zuri and the bass were slamming it. We moved around quite a bit, watching for bass to show on sonar or to make an appearance on topwater. We never marked a single fish on sonar today. But we did see a few fish break topwater. Most were fat, aggressive schoolies, but one fish was a monster! I thought is was a seal chasing bait at first sight, but it was indeed a very big bass. We went over and set several drifts, but this fish, like all the others, was a solo fish on the move, trying to find some sparse bait. My heart was still pounding five minutes later and we never saw that fish again!
Total catch and release today was 15 fish. Almost all of them on Billy’s Yo-Zuri popper and a few on 5″ rubber crank baits fished near the bottom. A lovely hot, humid morning on a flat-calm bay in the dog days of August.
