13 Fish, 1 Keeper, Giant Blue
On board today, I had repeat client, Pete Gaudette, for light tackle striped bass and blues. Pete is a member in good standing of The Baymen Club, going back fifteen years.
At first light, small schools of bass scattered around the bay with a few blues in the mix – some of them GIANTS! Today, the SW winds continued and it slowed fishing for sure but we found enough action to keep us busy all morning.
Oyster beds held a few, eel grass beds held a few and structure held a few. We even got into a late morning mini-blitz in four feet of water over the flats.
The run of the morning goes to Pete’s giant bluefish that hit a topwater sebile in white. That fish slammed the bait and took off with incredible speed. It turned the boat as line continued to scream off the reel. I started the boat at one point and started to back down as the spool was getting near the end! The fish finally stopped and Pete started to gain line. Then, the fish did a “tarpon leap” and crashed back down into the water about seventy yards off the boat. A few more short runs and we netted that fish and got it into the boat. What a fight and what an absolute blast on light tackle gear!
Total catch today was 13 fish, including a keeper bass. The SW winds were about half what they were yesterday, but still enough to slow the bite down. A very nice morning in the chop and the biggest blue we’ve landed this season.
