115 Stripers!!!
Thursday, May 21,2015
You read that correct – 115 striped bass landed and released! On board today I had repeat clients, Ken Hartshorn, Frank Harrington and his two sons, for LT striped bass.
At first light, conditions looked perfect. Overcast, flat calm and a dropping tide. And four anglers that know how to slam stripers with light tackle gear.
We found no fish in Duxbury bay and headed for Plymouth. All I can say is, when we got there, it was non-stop fishing for six solid hours!!! Bass and bait was absolutely stacked up in the bay and hugging the bottom of the deeper waters. Nothing on topwater to speak of. It was all a bottom fishing game.
Enter my 3/4 ounce Baymen Universal Jigs, tied for me by Jeck’s Bucktails (they are available at MGC Bait & Tackle, Rte. 53, Pembroke, MA.). All 115 fish were taken on my jigs fished on 45lb Suffix braid and 20lb Berkley Big Game mono leaders, with Temple Fork Outfitters SWS 7′ foot 8-17lb light tackle rods. Reels were Shimano 4000D baitrunners that do double duty as a LT reel on my charters. Drop the jigs to the bottom and bounce them back up to the surface. The bass absolutely slammed them!
One cool sight today was watching a huge seal grab a striper, tip its head back, and swallow it whole! Awesome to watch pretty close to the boat.
The tide bottomed up and then it turned and bass and bait continued to flood the bay. MORE Bass and Bait than I have every marked on sonar in our bay in 22 years of guiding!
Ken, Frank and the boys had one of those epic mornings we all dream of when everything lines up perfectly. Total catch for the morning: 115 striped bass on LT, to 26.5″ inches. Ten times the daily average on Baymen Charters! Chances are, we won’t see that kind of fishing again this season or even in a few seasons. But you just never know…
