On board today, I had repeat clients Bill Churchill and David Elmes for light tackle striped bass.

At first light, the bay was calm and stayed flat all morning. A low tide rising to +8.5 and a light SW wind. Water temps were crazing today, ranging from 62-70 degrees – up 9 degrees from yesterday! The hot 90 degree air temps warm up the flats and then warm the water as it enters the bay on the rising tide. That is my theory.

Topwater continues to be non-existent inside. Not a bird in the sky save for a few osprey. No bait seen anywhere except in a few isolated pockets. I looked all over the bays of Duxbury, Kingston and Plymouth for topwater fish, bait and birds and saw none. We immediately switched up the the plan and fished 100% structure the entire trip and found fish.

Bass were mainly schooled up in only two of my spots in the bay today. We fished several spots but the fish were just not there because there was no bait. Most of the bass were hugging the bottom and we fished rubber crankbaits with the cast ‘N count technique to get the tackle down. At one point, we decided to fish structure with topwater lures but we only got one fish.

Total catch and release today was 35 fish. Very happy with those numbers, more than double the daily average. Bill and Dave did well and fished hard non-stop. Weather was absolutely gorgeous. A great morning on the bay.
