15 Fish on The Fly

On board today, I had my client and good friend, Lt. Col. Richard “The Machine” Comstock on board for Fly only striped bass. As you may have read, Richard is one of my best fly clients and has been fly fishing with me forever.
FISH: Last night, I found the only school of fish in the bay at 5:30pm while scouting, I called Richard who was in town for a few days, and gave him the report. “Let’s Roll!” was his repsonse. So, we headed out at sunrise today, hoping the FOUR-HUNDRED-YARD school of striped bass would still be there. You know the answer: They were long gone south, out with the tide. We picked up five solo bass along the flats.

BREAKFAST at The Hop in Brant Rock: We gave it our best shot, it’s a Gap Day, the Fall Run has run out, NOAA said NE winds on the bay… We drive back to the boat ramp in Duxbury and I glass the bay. I can never go to the bay without glassing the bay for fish! BIG SCHOOL OF FISH about a mile out, SE of Two Rock! We park and jump in the boat and head out. You know what happened. The fish were gone before we even got to them and we picked up one solo bass.
RECON: Run the bay for fall blitz. Overcast, beautiful morning, rising tide. Find a few small schools. Find some more, and then some more and then? BIG SCHOOL of bass coming into the bay chasing bait. Switch from Baymen Universal to topwater popper. WHAM! FISH ON! And it pretty much stayed on for the rest of the morning and we drove away from breaking fish at the end of the charter.

BEARS DEN road trip. Need some new stuff. Bucktail, fly hooks, fly magazine, wader belt… Scotty in the house and as helpful and knowledgeable as always. Go to Bears Den or Call Scotty. Best little Fly Shop in Massachusetts. Absolutely packed with everything for the fly rodder. Tell him Capt. Dave sent you.

Total catch and release today was 15 striped bass on the fly. Baymen Universal, Baymen Clouser, and topwater Red/White popper were the top flies. Bass were thick on the incoming, almost non-existent on the dropping AM tide. At 5:30pm this evening, the Powder Point Bridge area was stacked with striped bass. Both sides of the bridge.
